If you regularly send files to people, an FTP server might suit you. An FTP server allows you to organize your files as you would in a desktop file explorer, provide access to other users to download files remotely and set specific permissions as to what users can and cannot do to your files.
File servers essentially act as a local shared hard drive for offices, and they’re only accessible within the business’ internal network. With FTP servers on the other hand, you store files on a remote server, uploaded via the internet.
  • The key difference between FTP vs SFTP is that SFTP uses a secure channel to transfer files while FTP doesn’t.
  • On a FTP server the users can authenticate themselves with a clear text sign in the protocol.
  • Usually, it requires the username and password.
  • However, it is possible to connect to the server anonymously if the server is configured to perform that way.
